Jason City Area Metro's Steps To Becoming a Fully Zero Emissions Transit Agency
We Are Going To Be Lowering Our CO2 Emissions Anually.
JCAM Will be Constantly Trying Out Zero Emission Battery Electric Buses. In Attempts To Try To Lower Our CO2 Emissions.
Now what is a Zero Emission Battery Electric Bus you might ask? Well zero emission buses are a lot like a normal average everyday bus but there's one big difference but what is that difference well instead of being powered by diesel fuel these buses are powered by batteries and don't give off any diesel tailpipe emissions. Now how come you never see a tailpipe on these buses well since these buses run solely on electricity and diesel fuel tailpipes aren't really needed as these buses get their power from various on board Proterra batteries which not only makes the buses move these batteries help run all of the sub systems on the vehicle.
A Cheaper Alternative To Fully Zero Emissions
JCAM Will be purchasing Hybrid Electric Powered Buses to make it cheaper for us to reach our Fully Zero Emissions Goal.
Now what is a Hybrid Electric Bus? Hybrid electric buses are a lot like a diesel bus but this bus has a big difference instead of just running solely on diesel fuel these buses run on both electricity and clean diesel fuel. At first the bus is all electric but once it hits above 25 miles per hour the clean diesel engine then takes over to power the bus at higher speeds.
A Second Alternative To Fully Zero Emissions
JCAM Will Be Purchasing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Buses. To help lower our CO2 Emissions. And help lower pollution.
Now what are Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses? Just like the battery electric bus these buses use electricity too but in a much different way. Yes these buses still have tailpipes but here's the catch these buses run on what's called "Compressed Hydrogen" which is located on the roof of the bus. The compressed hydrogen on the roof feeds what's called the "Fuel Cell" Now what is a fuel cell? A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical energy of a fuel (often hydrogen) and an oxidizing agent (often oxygen) into electricity through a pair of redox reactions. The energy the fuel cell receives from the compressed hydrogen is then converted into electricity which is sent to a battery to power the bus and runs all of the sub systems on the vehicle. Fuel by Hydrogen these Hydrogen Fuel Cells are true zero emission vehicles the only tailpipe emission from these buses is drinkable water. Now how do we refuel these buses? Well they fuel up like a regular bus at a fueling station at the depot similar to a diesel or CNG bus. With the 370+ mile range these buses can run all day and come in at night like a conventional bus. These buses do not require a 4 to 8 hour charge that a battery electric bus would require. Instead these fuel cell buses refuel within 10-12 minutes.
